What are the rules of 9 a side football? ›

Up to 9 players on each team, with 3 players each designated as forwards, centres and backs. After each goal the players must be in their respective third of the pitch but may rove freely after the ball-up. Goals and behinds may only be scored from within the forward zone.

A match is played by two teams, each consisting of not more than 5 players on the pitch at one given time. Squads can consist of a maximum of 8 players (3 substitutes). The game is officially played with 4 outfield players and 1 goalkeeper per team. Formations and positions are set by each team.

Number of Players A team will consist of 9 players, one of which will be a goalkeeper. A match will not start if any team has less than 7 players. Substitutions There are no limits to the amount of substitutions which may be used from the match day squad.

9V9 FOOTBALL- THE CURRENT STATE OF PLAY

Although 9v9 Football is accessible to club players at U11 (year 6) & U12, 7v7 is the maximum format in schools for U11's and 9v9 is the maximum for U12's.

It doesn't matter how fit you are, a fast-paced game of five-a-side will leave your lungs burning and shirt dripping with sweat. New research has now revealed small-sided games are even more physically taxing than 11-a-side football and could help you get fit for your weekend game.

No slide tackles are permitted. If a player attempts a slide tackle a free kick will be given to the opposition. Sportsmanship is expected at all times and any player expressing unsportsman-like behaviour will be asked to leave the pitch. No football boots are allowed on the pitches.

7-a-side football pitch size
